The United States Navy Memorial has Navy Log entry for "Michael Dennis 'Mike' Lares".

Michael's entry notes 3 years service (2/1984 to 2/1987), a speciality as a Hull Maintenance Technical Diver 2nd Class, and two "Significant Awards".

Not to be mistaken for being earned in recognition outstanding or distinguished personal performance or service, these are awards are simply for having participated, either as part of a unit for a period of time, or for having participated in an exercise.

The first is a unit award for battle efficiency competition. The second recognizes those service members who have performed military duty while stationed on a United States Navy, Coast Guard, Army, or NOAA vessel at sea.

The Navy Memorial Archivist explains:

This system is meant to be a registry to honor all those who have served in the sea services of the United States to include the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine, This registry is open to all. The United States Navy Memorial is a non-profit non-governmental organization an as such we have no direct access to private personnel records.

As to your question about whether an entry is accurate or true, service members are generally very careful about being accurate in all matters concerning their service. There have been essenially no challenges to the information in the Navy Log. However, such information is subject to the vagaries of individuals' memories.
